Why Dr Shashi Tharoor should be elected from Trivandrum?

A request to all the voters of Trivandrum – elect Dr Shashi Tharoor as MP from Trivandrum. It is a God given opportunity for the people of Trivandrum that we got a candidate of such caliber in the election. Even the opponents love him. This is what the communist stalwart G Govinda Pillai has to say about him when Dr Tharoor went to meet him - “People like Dr Tharoor is the kind of people who should emerge as leaders in politics”. Support cutting across political beliefs.

Why should we elect him? I have started keenly following politics from 1984 and have been voting since 1996. I have never seen in the last 25 years any other candidate who has spelled out a vision for Trivandrum like Dr Tharoor did. During the election time we get lot of promises – promises like construction of roads, bridges, drainage, drinking water to be made available – all these promises will be broken soon after the elections. Here is a candidate with a marked difference from others talking about using the modern resources/facilities of the 21st century to make Trivandrum a truly global city. This is the first time we have a candidate who thinks globally above the cheap politics. A welcome change indeed! Here is his vision statement in Malayalam for you all to see.

Now like any other candidate after winning the elections Dr Tharoor can also go back on these promises. So normal to think that way after seeing the past experiences. But he will be different for the following reasons.

First, if he was just after power, fame and money that come with it he could have easily taken the back door to enter the parliament via Rajya Sabha. When ever UPA government is formed he could have become a minister also. So by opting to contest from Lok Sabha he has proved that he really wants to be elected to the Indian Parliament through the front door.

Second reason – when the bloggers met him at his residence, to the question, how he plans to be an MP – the answer he gave gives me a lot of hope. He says that he has taken up so many responsibilities in the past successfully and as an MP if he doesn’t serve the people of his constituency that will affect his credibility as a “doer” that he has built till now. Also the frank answer that “I will let the people I represent know in a timely manner what all work I have done as their MP”, is so different from the answer the politicians we see in the normal day to day life gives.

Thirdly, contrary to the rumors spread by his opponents that since he lived all his life in air conditioned offices and outside India he cannot understand the sufferings of the common man, here is a man who has travelled length and breadth of the world, headed so many humanitarian missions of UN, who has spent most of the time with people suffering due to war, famines etc; he should be able to understand the suffering and needs of the common man more than any other person. Here what Dr Tharoor has to say about his work in the UN.

It is to the credit of Dr Tharoor that he has answered all the allegations raised by his opponents against him. He wrote an open letter back to Minister Binoy Vishwam who alleged that Dr Tharoor was a friend of Israel. The initial allegation was that he doesn’t know how to speak Malayalam and he answered his critics with very good Malayalam. Here is Dr. Tharoor talking in Malayalam about Kerala and his childhood.

Voters of Trivandrum – it is decision time for you. We have elected different politicians from different parties for the last sixty years with no big difference in the performance of those elected. Here is a chance to cast our vote for a candidate with a clear vision for Trivandrum who is different from all the people elected till now. Let us give Dr Shashi Tharoor a chance to fulfill his vision for the people of Trivandrum/Kerala/India by electing him as our representative from Trivandrum

If you have a vote in this election, don’t waste it. Go and cast it and make your friends, family members and relatives also cast their votes. Each vote matters in all constituencies for the long living of the Indian democracy.

Nice post, Brijesh. My impression of Dr. Tharoor was pretty much the same. If for nothing else, I think he makes the best choice because he alone has dared to elucidate a vision which looks into the future and beyond the MP's Fund.

I have added you to my blog-roll. Looking forward to more from you! Happy Vishu and best of luck to all of us for the Elections!

How tharoor got this seat is also matters here. When he contested for UN General Secretary post, he have two options, either win and be the biggest bureaucrat or fails and become India's External Affairs Minister. This is the offer given to him by Govt of India (or the PM Manmohan Singh) for loosing his career for the country. And because of that he got a chance now through congress.
He came to trvm only in october and how we can expect him to know the problems of trvm in this short period. thats y i sugested... let him work for the people of trvm for the next 5 years. After all he is too young naa....

Read your post and let me tell you frankly am not against or for any political party. I do agree with your point that politicians we elected so far have not done much to the state. Having said this
I'm putting forward a new theory.

You said Shashi Tharoor is the right person who can bring fortunes to Trivandrum and Kerala. As per my perception, Shashi tharoor having spent enormous time dealing with international issues must have built a very good relationship with leaders of different nations. Am sure Congress party/Sonia will give him External Affairs portfolio once he is elected (which I believe he will make it). BUT have you ever thought of a scenario where he came back to india and contesting election to fulfil a hidden agenda, especially for an external force. Assume that he has good relationship with an external country and they want to influence our external ministry and make the policies convenient for them . If they place a minister whom they can influence at the helm of the ministry it will definitely beneficial for them. And with the vast experience Tharoor has in UN and with other global leaders, this possibility cannot be ruled out.

So I dont completely disagree with what Binoy Viswam commented about Mr Throor. After I saw Tharoor's response (that too in response to unpopular Binoy Viswam)I have a strong feeling that Throor has a hidden agenda.

Also , I read his "Vision for Trivandrum" posted on his website. If you read it carefully you can makeout that he is not proposing any new and significant things. He is reiterating whatever developments are going on currently.

I expect a man of his calibre should have proposed some real vision which we mallus can look forward to fulfil, something like a paradigm shift. Some policy changes which he will try to initiate , how he will spent his MP budget. But after going through his "vision" statement I felt he is rather explaining mission as an MP rather than Vision.

But have to agree , he is better than other bunch of idiots/criminals contesting against him and I'll surely vote for Mr Throor.

If he has any hidden agenda, do you think that he will be able to do that going against the congress party and its leaders. So this doubt is foolish. Even if he becomes the external affairs minister, he will be working with bureaucrats. He cannot make any decision freely, even if the doubts of "communists" are true. He will ousted from the ministry in that case. So we don't have to worry about that. His rapport with world leaders will help us to get closer towards other countries.

Mr Jpk, This is india my friend. what you mentioned here is an ideal scenario where leaders selflessly work for the country.

Why do you think this thought is foolish ? Can you prove that Congress leaders are clean and they work entirely for the country , not for themselves. Can you prove this with amount of wealth they gained over the years .. just by serving people.

In India due to foreign publicity Shashi Tharoor has a great image. A critical analysis reveals that Tharoor a reasonable intellect is a great opportunist. He has benefitted quite a bit from his marriage to Christa Giles. Giles needs to be researched in order to critically assess what Tharoor may be up to. His first wife the brilliant and cultured Indian Lady Tilottama can enlighten one more on Tharoor. Tilottama was surely better looking than Giles and also a greater intellect than Shashi.
